Description

One very bothersome problem I have with tank combat is that when I drive a tank or command it, half the time the AI is looking in a weird direction where there is nothing interesting. This is especially irritating when I know I'm heading towards enemy territory, but the dumbarse gunner is just looking backwards.

This problem has been in the game since 1.00 I think, and it would be awesome if the AI was watching kinda forward all the time, unless told otherwise.

Tank gunner is looking in arbitrary directions.

Expected

Unless there's a effective threat the tank gunner should watch in the direction the tank is headed.

I allowed myself to reformat/add clues to the ticket.

Now we only need a mission or way to repro this most easily.

EDIT: Last time I just made a mission with Utes to let a tank drive from the Airport to Kameny and it was fine, it was pointing in the proper direction. So probably it needs an enemy at 6 o'clock first to make it turn the turret.

With which patch version did you see that behaviour? I cannot repro this anymore even after placing an enemy unit at 6 first and then drive on.

Maybe it is related to #6476, i.e. when an enemy retreats and the gunner follows the target even it's out of LoF/LoS.

With patch 1.05, I tried placing an invincible soldier behind the tank and drove away. After it lost LoS (Line of Sight) to the target, it still kept looking in that direction.

BUT after I hit Tab then again, I ordered "No Target." and it adjusted the gun back to the front, as it should.

So unless you gonna bring a good repro I'll expire this bug after 14 days.

Yes make sure to order them no target.
Either via 2-1 or RMB.

This happened in 1.04 (not sure with 1.05)

Its caused by you getting into a vehicle AFTER the other crew members have boarded, they seem to not register you as 'leader' (if you happen to not be in the 'commanders' position) and do there own thing. Ordering 'No Target' and/or 'Return to Formation' doesn't work as your not 'seen' as crew leader.

Try making the AI disembark (with you still in the vehicle) and then order them to re-board, Or always board your vehicle BEFORE the AI :)

I only use tanks in CTI, and sometimes its good for a longer time, but the fear always lingers. :D I'll try that "no target" command, but the gunner often turns the turret even if they report no enemy.

Do you use scan horizon? Or watch at XXX?

The AI does not look stupid to 12 o clock all the time.
It might be good useful at times though. Maybe some mode like aware/safe does that?

It looks for enemies within approx. 60 degrees in the direction you drive, from what I've seen - I don't think that's that bad.
