Description

Firebal asked me to make a separate report regarding an issue i observed and described in bug #1905.

I was asked that you please would divide the potential "major problem with the AI" into a separate bug - the "packaging" of bugs is really hard to track and fix.
---

AI that is 'scanning around' should not look at the pieces where there is a wall directly in their line of sight, blocking the view.

This becomes apparent in the campaign's opening sequence ('daydream').
After a few seconds, the fellow soldiers who initially are looking out of the bunker 'window', will start looking to the left or right of them; effectively making them to stare directly at a blind wall that is 1 meter in front of them.

I have 2 different 'suspicions' for this behavior:
1) AI should, when scanning the environment, ignore pieces where the line of sight is blocked. So when they see a wall directly in front of them, they should move on a bit.

2) an issue with the 'detection' script, which causes AI to be able to 'see through walls'; although maybe they do not fire, when tracking enemy units, the line of sight seems to be ignored. I am aware this was a much discussed issue, also in OFP, but the example in the bunker suggest that something (still) is not correctly functioning there.
Possibly they 'estimate' the location of an enemy unit that moved somewhere so they dont see it anymore, but when this 'estimation' brings it behind a wall, they should look at the closest point with no obstructed LOS (until about the same distance).

ps @ point 1: it's probably better to first let the script define the next viewpoint and see is that is obstructed too, instead of making the AI 'turn' a bit more. Because that would lead to the AI making little-little turns all the way until the LOS is clear.

This might actually be the cause for what you see sometimes: AI turning around REALLY SLOWLY before they move off in the appointed direction.

Thanks for your theories.

Your could after all be a duplicate of #1626. Not sure though and I can't judge this without analyzing the other bug completely - maybe you want to see for yourself and tell me then.

hi again

main issue here is that the AI is actually pointing its gun at a blind wall.

then i had 2 possible causes, of which one might actually lead to the behaviour described in bug #1626

but main issue is that I observed AI pointing at the inside wall of the bunker in the start sequence of the game...

Is this still an issue with 1.04? The slow turning behaviour is fixed from what I can tell - but they still do turn.

Last call for verification. I think that issue has certainly been addressed in the meantime, please confirm.

NOT fixed in 1.04.

Just see for yourself!
Guy in the front - he may be acting a little better (not sure). Still I saw him look behind him (in my direction).
But the guy to the right (take few steps back and look to right)

is still aiming to the wall that covers his left flank. Would like to add a screenshot but cannot.
So, not fixed at all.

See, that's why we're asking for feedback. Thanks.

I can recommend using ZScreen for screenshots, google it.
