Description

Repro:
Start test Mission
there is a BMP on the hill to the north, don´t kill it yet
Observe how it will immediately start to turn the turret searching for enemys.
If you place the BMP closer to your position, then it will immediately turn it´s turret towards your tank, even if it is facing away from you.

This is due to the radar/IR vehicle detection system the BMP-2 (and almost other armoured vehicle) has in game. Note the red square on the radar in the top left of screen in your demo mission. The BMP-2 commander has the same thing. This means they can detect you as soon as the mission starts without looking at you.

Whether or not this feature is realistic is beyond me.

It is not that simple. I think that your vehicle doesn´t appear on this radar if you have your engines off, still the BMP knows that you are there.
Try the same thing with any other vehicle and you will get different results. A BRDM won´t "see" you, a BMP 3 or a T-72 will.

None of these vehicles has radar in real life. I don't think they do in ArmA 2 either, the 'radar' is just a visual representation of the vehicle's knowsabout values.

This glitch occurs even in ACE, where the radars are removed.

I can't see the same results (using CO without mods). When I start the mission, the BMP-2 immediately turns and fires on me even while the engine my off (all fuel removed).
If I play as the BMP-2's gunner, I see that the BMP-2 commander immediately detects the M1A2 as an enemy without visual inspection.
If I turn the M1A2 around 180 degrees, it's commander tells me to target the BMP-2 without seeing it either, therefore the M1A2 has the same ability as the BMP-2 at this range.
BMP-3, T-72 and T-90 have the same result as a BMP-2 (although the T-72 and T-90 apparently have some delay due to waiting till the commander finishes his "Target that..." speech)
Change the BMP-2 to a BRDM-2 ATGM, Shilka, Tunguska or BTR-90 and it will not fire - although it's radar detects the M1A2 as an unknown vehicle, it does not detect it as enemy. (this is a separate bug - AI should visually inspect unknown targets).

I assume that different vehicles have differing IR/radar detection ranges, that shows/reveals any (powered?) vehicle with LOS, with different knowsAbout values at different ranges. MBT and BMP's have better IR/radar than lighter vehicles.

So the tests are showing that it is the commander who seems to have a 360° magic radar vision in most armored vehicels.....
