Description

Many missiles in game are flying with incredible speeds.
I've collected some data about several Combined Ops missiles and put them roughly there.

Observed max speeds ingame
(may be inaccurate, depending on situation)
  • BGM-71 TOW (M_TOW_AT): 400 m/s (Mach 1.2)
  • M47 Dragon (M_47_AT_EP1): 380 m/s (Mach 1.1)
  • SA-7 Grail (M_Strela_AA): 700 m/s (Mach 2.0)
  • AT-2 Swatter (M_AT2_AT): 300 m/s (Mach 0.9)
  • AT-5 Spandrel (M_AT5_AT): 350 m/s (Mach 1.0)
  • AT-6 Spiral (M_AT6_AT): 1070 m/s (Mach 3.1)
  • AT-9 Spiral-2 (M_AT9_AT): 2000 m/s (Mach 5.8)
  • AT-10 Stabber (M_AT10_AT): 2310 m/s (Mach 6.7)
  • AT-11 Sniper (M_AT11_AT): 2310 m/s (Mach 6.7)
  • AT-13 Saxhorn-2 (M_AT13_AT): 300 m/s (Mach 0.9)
  • AT-16 Scallion (M_Vikhr_AT): 1700 m/s (Mach 5.0)

Expected

  • BGM-71 TOW (M_TOW_AT):
    max 278 m/s (Mach 0.8)
    max range 3750 m
    time to max range 20 s
  • M47 Dragon (M_47_AT_EP1):
    max 200 m/s (Mach 0.6), however time to max range indicates otherwise.
    max range 1000 m
    time to max range 11.2 s
  • SA-7 Grail (M_Strela_AA):
    max 500 m/s (Mach 1.5)
    max range 4200 m
    time to max range 17 s
  • AT-2 Swatter (M_AT2_AT):
    max 230 m/s (Mach 0.7)

This mission allows tester to track:
- Missile speed curve
- Missile maximum speed
- Missile RL speed

Results are dumped to RPT. Precision of speed tracking is 0.1 real time seconds.

Example output:

I am 90% sure that the speed of sound in the game is slower than in Real life,i will make a ticket ,later, on that.

This ticket is related to missiles ,but it's the whole "speed" system in the game that is bugged,and i'm pretty sure tat developpers increased speeds to make them feel realistic.

Some missiles though have very low speeds.

Real TOW speed is 187.5m/s http://archive.gao.gov/d31t10/145879.pdf

KH29 needed to be renamed to X29 or to CH29 really.But this missile very sensitive to bad weather smokes fog and night - so will be nice to see in game.

ATAKA 9M120 (AT-9) have around 500m/s in game.Just checked now.

zGuba,i appreciate your work ... but i don't think that arma's engine is reliable when it comes to speed calculation,it is more a visula effect than a calculated thing.

Thanks, I did the ticket in hurry, it might have resulted in some errors and I have to apologize for them.
Qazdar, the velocities are important factor in any simulation games... if it's engine problem, then it should be fixed.

Maximum speed of TOW is 278 m/s. 187.5 m/s is just average speed (3750 m / 20 s)

if you able to implement profile for speed (different speed on different distance )I and all players will be more than happy :) Currently in game 278 m/s is maximum and average and one and only.
I'd rather will happy to see average speed of 187 m/s than average maximum 278 due to a lot of reason game play first reason much better and realism as well.

I'm currently collecting data of maximum speed, maximum range and time to flight for as many missiles mentioned as possible. Unfortunately Soviet missiles are documented poorly.

"Control range: 4000 meters"
"Time on control range: 24 seconds"

"Maximum speed: 277 meters per second"
"Maximum range: 3885 meters"
"Control range: 3750 meters"
"Time on control range: 19 seconds"

Also export [speed,range] curve.
