Description

I observed something very strange today. APFSDS and some tank HEAT rounds appear to be shattering on impact, creating secondary projectiles that bounce back from impact with a hard target.

I was firing at a BMP on a treeline and could clearly see puffs of dust in the leaves and grass. They couldn't have been ricochets, because I was observing 1-5 simultaneous impacts on completely different vectors. This tends to happen with hard targets and you need the perfect view to see it correctly.

Has ACE implemented some sort of shrapnel? I'm not sure if this is a glitch or a promising new feature.

Repro mission directions: Shoot sabot rounds at the T-90 near the treeline and observe the popup targets upon impact. It may take a few tries, but you should see several target register hits, usually three or four at a time in various parts of the formation. Shoot at the concrete wall and you will see multiple puffs of dust on the slope beneath it. This also works the sabot and HEAT rounds for the T-72B.

That are the petals from the round flying off when leaving the barrel.
In ACE since Arma 1.

Thats why you don't stand in the LoF from a tank, even if it's shooting over your head (ingame) because the petals can still hit other vehicles and players. Not to mention to overpressure effect.

Also described in the documentation: http://ace.dev-heaven.net/wagn/Overpressure

In that case, is the T-72B's HEAT round saboted? And do the petals fly out of the barrel like extra projectiles (in the game) or do they scatter from the projectile itself? On impact? In flight? Just curious.

Something to read:

And no, a HEAT round is a full caliber round.

If the T-72B's HEAT round is not saboted, then there is still a bug, because I have observed sabot petal impacts when using this ammunition.

Petals + debris kicked up. Maybe you seen both of it.

ArmA does not simulate debris kicked up. There is only an invisible damage radius and a cloud of smoke. These were separate impacts on an empty map, and there were no CD objects that could have been flying around.

So that returns to my original question. Does ACE simulate secondary projectiles resulting from the impact of certain tank rounds? Or does the T-72B HEAT round cause the release of sabot petals when it should not?

Sabot petals are seperating once the projectile leaves the barrel, so on impact there is no (atleast should not) sabot material involved except for the projectile itself.

Please specify what you see on your end on impact, at best with pictures.

I see puffs of dust, exactly the same FX as a bullet hitting the ground.

Typically, there are three to four impacts, almost simultaneous with the impact of the main round, but usually coming slightly after, and short of the target. They seem to be large, usually knocking down three closely-packed popup target dummies at once. They certainly are sabot petals, but I don't know why the HEAT round from the T72 has them.
