Description

Group leader often advances leaving his groupies behind when behaviour is "COMBAT" or "STEALTH".
This is a quite old issue, inherited from OFP and ArmA, that's still here after some years.

This is VERY annoying since leaders die one by one like lemmings.

Run the attached mission a few times, you should be able to notice athe least once the group leader leaving behing his men ..

Closed Bug 2171 Description:

AI Leader Behaviour: COMBAT & STEALTH: Group leader tends to get too far ahead of his group

Issue: Group leader tends to get too far ahead of his group. The remainder of the group close up to the leader as two sub-groups covering each other in turn. This is unnecessary and unrealistic exposure.

Test: AI infantry group moving to a waypoint set COMBAT/STEALTH and LIMITED/NORMAL.

Expectation/solution:
1) The group leader should be assigned to and move with one of of the sub-groups, not independently.
2) The leaderless sub-group could move first with the leader's sub-group covering.
3) Sub-groups could leapfrog (move through/past) each other at bounds.

Update:
Attached mission 'Utes Behaviour Test' demonstrates leader behaviour using three AI groups moving over open terrain at different speeds: LIMITED, NORMAL, FULL. Behaviour is set by radio triggers: A = AWARE, B = COMBAT, C = STEALTH. For clarity, group leaders have been changed to Insurgent Boss.

In AWARE, the leader stays with the group.
In COMBAT/STEALTH the leader frequently moves forward on his own.

n.b. Issue was present in ArmA and raised on the old ArmA bugtracker (Bug 2306).

kju: I have closed 2171 (if I can do that?)

Sorry missed that one.

Still a problem for 1.03 - I guess so?

Not the group leader is suicidal, the group is too cowardly. When i am the group leader and all members of my group are in "combat" mode, then they doesn´t follow me fast enough, i must wait long seconds up to some minutes bevore they are moving to my position.

  1. [60129] Fixed: AI subordinates now move faster (use less cover) to catch up when leader is way ahead of them.
  2. [60102] Fixed: AI subordinates should now respect formation more when moving in combat.
  3. [60101] Fixed: Group leader was often running far ahead alone in combat.
  4. [60092] Fixed: AI leader did not wait for a player to cover him when moving in combat.

Thx, behaviour definetely improved (60141).
I'm going to test this thoroughly.

Updated by acf almost 6 years ago

Was pleasantly surprised to see this. However, the fix sounds like the group are being made more suicidal, not the leader less.

Updated by Suma almost 6 years ago

The important part of for this was "Group leader was often running far ahead alone in combat."

Please, do not post your feedback based on how fix sounds, instead test, if you do not like what you see, report back.

Updated by fabrizioT almost 6 years ago

Behaviour is improved in build 60141 to me.
I see leader waiting for squaddies: it would be desiderable having him stop in cover, if possible, when in combat mode.
Leader's behaviour is better, but still there's room for improvements (= tighter grouping), especially when in urban areas.
Waiting to test build 60220.

Please try again with the new beta patch and report back:

  • [60220] Improved: AI covering units tend to stay close to each other.

I like it how it is, with the exception that they take too long to clear the open field:

When under fire, open field means death, thus the leader is supposed to expedite along with the whole squad to some point where they can use terrain or objects as cover.

But that is a separate feature, might as well file a request.

To me, strictly speaking, this is almost fixed in v.1.04 BETA (last build checked: 61062).
Thanks.

(beta patches for 1.05 are 1.05 beta patches - just to avoid confusion)
