Description

This feature will add realism, but mainly is useful for recon, map reading, self location and etc. without GPS. When a vehicle unit loses it's standing point or location on the map a soldier can count distance to the last known location, line up the distance to the last known heading and calculate approximate location.

Pilots use odometer for recon map markup. E.g. you write down the odometer value and start travel from one point to another, then you calculate the traveled distance and put a point on the map. Now you know the distance between them and can find location of other objects faster.

I repeat, this is for realism when not using GPS and units are not shown on the map.

Sorry, but I'm not familiar with the version terms. Needs Contributors means you need more info from other knowing people or someone to work with the feature in the ACE team?

"Needs contributors" is a bit of a meta milestone;
we use it for features which we probably would like to add, but need either a 3rd party to contribute it (or parts of it, like information).
However when-ever any of our devs have a lucky day with some free time and motivation for such feature, it might be implemented regardless.

"Planned" has more certainty and priority, basically just waiting to be attached to a specific version Milestone like v1.6/1.7 etc.

Thanks. It's clear now. Will some additional info, technical data, practical ideas or feature description boost the motivation or help some dev in future? ;) I mean spammin my ideas like I always do))))

I could make a simple odometer.
  • No GUI, just hints for now
  • Local to client
  • Cannot based on instantaneous speed measurements or axle rotation, instead similar to a GPS pedometer (result is nearly the same)
  • Interval distance measurements every 6 seconds or when odometer display key pressed
  • Saves odometer per vehicle unless reset, player must start odometer every time he enters vehicle, auto stops when player leaves vehicle
  • Discard measurement when height exceeded (being transported by air) or distance exceeds what is possible with vehicle max speed (teleported)
  • Two buttons - start, stop (resets when stop held down)
