Description

I would like to request permission to view a copy of an unbinarized p3d model of a rucksack. I am interested in looking at what type of LOD's or proxies are needed. I just want to see an example of how to correctly make a rucksack. Thank you.

Okay for me, maybe for Xeno; need confirmation from Rocko about author rights.
But iirc most of the models have been with us since ACE1, I suspect it not to be a problem, yet waiting for Rocko.

Much appreciated if it is possible.

The question that I need help with is what do you use to place the rucksack properly on a units back? Do you use a memory LOD? I had to adjust the model in O2, create pbo, then launch game to see how the rucksack was placed. Then start the process over of re-adjusting the model in O2, creating pbo, then launching the game to check the placement of the rucksack in game. I had to do this process until it was finally placed it in the proper position that a rucksack would be. Is there an easier way to do this?

This is how it looked when I initally created the pbo

then after repeatingly adjusting the model in O2 I got it to be situated properly... the question is is there an easier way of placing the position of the rucksack on the back of a unit?

whoops, sorry totally forgot.

find an example of a rucksack used in ace attached.

hope it helps.

edit re: ruck alignment.

no theres no easier way of placing them. at least not for A2. we had a formula how to "turn ruckmodels" that were "cut out" from regular units with a modeled backpack.

with the ruckexample you can align yours. just put the ace one in the 0 lod and your ruck in the 1 lod.

re: alignment #2

if you are familiar with o2 + bulldozer you could try the following.

take an example model of the a2 soldier. open model. make sure your p: drive contains all the ca stuff.
look for the launcher proxy in the soldier model. should be named rpg-something.001.

change the proxy path to your backpackmodel.

disable model.cfg in bulldozer and hit preview. that should make the backpack appear aligned correctly on the soldier.
then adjust your backpack model accordingly.

after looking at it let me ask you this about the LOD's. All that you need are resolution, view pilot, and shadowVolume 0.000 and shadowVolume 10.000? there is no need for geometry and any others?

will try your suggestion and update

firegeo was removed due to backpacks being kind of an extra armor at the back. geo is not needed afaik. same for view geo.

Wow that is pretty amazing I copied my model into the ruckexample and it is situated perfectly with it. I tried the proxy and I think that would only be helpful if I was modeling a soldier with a backpack? or is the proxy just telling where something goes if it is equiped to a unit?

Back to the LODS.. I have resolution LOD's 0.000 thru 3.000 and a ShadowVolume 0.000. My question is about a proper ShadowVolume.. what I did was duplicated my resolution 0.000, selected the object (ctrl-A), then Structure > Triangulate \, then I selected sharp edges U. It looks like in the ruckexample the ShadowVolume faces are reversed.... is that correct?

in ace the rucksacks are configured like launchers. they use the same proxy. instead of launcher model you see a backpack.
so for the process of aligning your backpack you can replace the launcher proxy in the a2 soldier model with your rucksackmodel.

ingame when you pickup a backpack it will go to the original launcher slot, hence the alignment.

yes, shadowlod is triangulated, sharped and reversed. make sure to remove the textures in the shadow lod, if not done already.

So does that mean I would have to configure my rucksack like a launcher in my config.cpp?

that means to rename the launcher proxy in a2 soldier to the path of my rucksack model and the purpose would be strictly to align my rucksack properly using buldozer... and I would NOT have to add any type of proxy to my rucksack model? I guess I am having a hard time understanding how that would tell my model to align properly with any unit in ArmA2? So basically how I am understanding this is it is in the configuration of my model that determines where it is placed on a unit. Is that correct? and if so where would I check out an example of a rucksack config?

CORRECT!

CONFIG RUCK AS LAUNCHER - CHECK SIX CONFIGBROWSER ON DEV-HEAVEN.NET

PROXY ONLY CHANGED DURING TRYING TO ALIGN THE RUCKSACK CORRECTLY. NO FURTHER PROXIES NEEDED.

Thanks I understand and will check out the SIX CONFIGBROWSER on Dev-Heaven.net

Once again thank you for your help.

ok I looked at the Config Browser and had been in contact with Evil Echo who gave me pointers on writing a config... I think I am already using the proper config for ace.. maybe you can see something that is wrong, because my rucksack without adjustment will show in game not at the right position.

#include "script_component.hpp"

class CfgPatches {
class rum_prc117_rush72 {
units[] = {};
weapons[] ={ "RUM_PRC117_RUSH72" };
requiredVersion = REQUIRED_VERSION;
requiredAddons[] = {"ace_sys_ruck"};
version = VERSION;
author[] = {"Meatball0311"};
};
};

class CfgWeapons {
class ACE_Rucksack;
class RUM_PRC117_RUSH72 : ACE_Rucksack {
scope = 2;
ACE_PackSize = 20250;
ACE_Size = 20251;
ACE_Weight = 6.5;
displayName = "RUM_PRC117_RUCKSYSTEM";
model = "rum_prc117_rush72\RUM_PRC117_RUSH72.p3d";
picture = "rum_prc117_rush72\data\radioruckICO.paa";
descriptionShort = "RUM PRC117 RUSH72";
};
};

Config looks fine.

It must be something with your model then. Mind to publish it, so I can have a look?
