Description

I came across issue with Skype application versus ARMA 2.

when any 4.x build is running and chat window (not the user list window) is open
then ARMA 2 (foreground) in windowed mode is 'micro'-stuttering, quite noticeably.

it seems something in Skype chat window breaks ARMA 2 rendering smoothness.

Closing the chat window shows immediate result in lower/none stuttering.
(no need close skype or user list tho it may have some minor effect too)

Affected ARMA 2 versions any 1.0x so far.
Experienced so far on all 32bit OSes (XP,Vista,Seven) and some Windows 7 64bit.
CPUs various multicores.
GPUs AMD.ATI HD5770, HD4670 etc.

This 'report' is mainly to cover this issue as it contains workaround
and most likely is not fixable by BI in ARMA 2 engine (bug in Skype itself).

Skype much CPU load. May lack the power CPU

The issue seems to have new chat windows open while running the game.
When setting skype to N/A to avoid windows being opened, I think it is ok.

However I did not test this much.

well i don't see any CPU usage spike by the skype process nor DPC latencies spikes
imho some skype's interface related function cause this problem

Its not an arma 2 issue its a skype issue! if you use any messenger type program they are system hogs when new windows open up, regardless of what system spec your using. Also it can effect your internet speed when using it at the same time as playing MP, but then it is a internet communcation software and requires constant open communication with the severs, so it interrupts your MP connection occasionally, resulting in the stuttering, lag and disconnects in some cases during MP. I have the same with yahoo messenger which has a running process of 18,792k memory when minimised to the task bar, yet with a chat window open it can increase to 30,000k memory and once the chat window is closed it only goes back down to 22,000k memory usage. Its basically, like all messenger programs, acting like 2 seperate running programs memory wise when you have an open chat window.

So its not an Arma 2 issue, its simply down to poor memory usage of such programs like skype and yahoo. So if your constantly chatting on skype while playing its memory usage will effect your game. So when you consider that arma 2 is also a system hog on most systems then when using another program at the same time that is also a hog on the system, then its no real surprise to see the game stuttering really is it? atleast thats how i see it.

Well, I can't repro any microstuttering at all, while having the chat window open and playing in windowed mode.

Since I'm an Nvidia user, this might be an ATI/Catalyst issue.

I currently have Nvidia aswell, but as i stated in another bug issue, i am getting a new rig hopefully this week, which will have an ATI card. So i can do some testing to see if i get the problem with the ATI card and report back to all.

So, how about it?

Hi Fireball,

Sorry, i forgot about this issue! I have however ran Arma 2 with yahoo open, along with yahoo chat window open, and its the same as with my old rig memory usage wise, for when i open a chat window. But theirs no disconnects or stuttering when a message window pop's open anymore. I believe the extra memory and Cpu power the new rig has, has eliminated the effects.

Ill give it a try with skype now and see if theirs any noticeable difference, will just leave a chat window open and skype window open too, wont beable to test to see what effect a popping open chat window has on the game since unless a contact is online though. As soon as ive tested skype ill update this post for you.

Fireball

I have tested it with skype.

With just the contact list open (compact view - as normal view has chat/contact window opened as one window), there is no noticeable difference in performance.

However, with both chat and contact windows opened (again compact view), the extra opened chat window does not have any really noticable effect, however there is the odd very minor stutter that is hardly noticable (no such stutter occurs when skype is closed, or when i just have the contact window opened - only occurs when the chat window is open).

Because there is the extra stutter (no matter how minor it is), then its safe to assume that there is an issue with arma and skype chat windows running simultaneously. Obiviously amount of stuttering will vary on each system, so as mine is a new system the effect is minimal, but older systems or systems with less or more used up harddrive space or with older less powerfull hardware, will see more of an effect - i expect.

So overall, yes there is an increase in micro-stuttering, but not very noticable on my system.

Thanks. I'll try it myself (both windows open) once in a while and report back.

I have the same problem when using the instant messenger "Digsby". But the problem was with every game I tested and has nothing to do with Arma, I just switched to another IM.

ATI card here, too. Try using Fraps to log your frametimes, the FPS stay constant but the time between them alters, and test with other games if Skype has an Arma specific issue.
